Shore Up the Foundation

As I wUntitled 1walked down the hall this morning I spied the painting of my parents’ turn of the century home where I lived as a teenager. Danny and I bought the home from my widowed mother and lived there for a few years. It’s my favorite style of house. High ceilings, huge windows, wrap around porch all grab my heart, along with big rooms and a sleeping porch on the back. The only problem with 100 year old homes is that they are old! We spent most of our time working on the foundation and under-girding of the house. For those of you who have loved and lived in them, you know that powder post beetles can leave the beams soft and walking across the floor always makes things rattle. Still, to this day my kids say they miss that house. I too would love to have another just like it – except built brand new! If the foundation is messed up it doesn’t matter what the house itself looks like.

Oh beloved, you’ve been living in an old house. You’ve tried to be good enough and shore yourself up to stand sturdy, but life is shaky. You work so hard at being good, but still things rattle. You want the outside to be just right, so that others will look and think that all is well. You want to keep up appearances, but what about the foundation? God wants you to know this morning that He has already made away for you to have a brand new life! It’s a sturdy, strong life. He doesn’t make life like paintings or movies, both can be manipulated and change appearance so easily. He works with those of us who are done trying to make it on our own. Isn’t that good news? You don’t have to fake it till you make it or work yourself to death trying to keep up appearances. God uses those whose foundations are insecure to give them His foundation – through Christ! A precious cornerstone that will not move or shake or fail, even when the winds come and the rains beat down. God shines His glory through broken things – that He makes new!

God wants to shore you up, repair your broken places, fix the shakiness of your heart and set you securely in Him. It’s time to quit worrying about appearances and let Christ appear in all His glory in your life. A saved life is a reconciled, renewed, restored and redeemed life. It’s okay to let God see your broken places because He will use even that to shine you forth for His glory in the world today. You don’t have to work yourself to death any longer – just abide in Him and let Him do the work in you!

God loves you and He’s for you. That’s all that matters. That’s exactly what matters! Because of Jesus, you have a brand new life to live. Because of the Holy Spirit you have a way to keep living upright and strong for the Kingdom. Rejoice as you begin today to show God’s wonderful work in your life as you live in the light of His Wonderful Works in your life!

Isaiah 28:16 Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken.

I Corinthians 1:26 Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you.

I Corinthians 3:11 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Psalm 62:6 He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

About Rebekah Beene

In a Women’s meeting in 1983, I went up for prayer and to see if God had “anything for me”. The woman of God who was praying for people spoke over my life. She said these words: “You will write books. You can go to the bank on it. Rivers of living water will flow from your belly…”
