One of my aunts loved genealogy, and now one of her daughters enjoys it as well. While it’s amazing to go back many generations and look at names and places, nothing about that gives much info if any on personalities and the like. I did find out from her that a great grandfather back a way was a preacher. So at least I know of a spiritual connection in the family. I find that hair color, eye color and height are significant to me. Where did I get my blue eyes from? Why was a cousin red headed? That kind of stuff.
Something I do know about an ancestor on both of my sides. I had a grandmother who was very fearful. About everything. And I had a grandfather who was well very mean. About everything. Those are two traits of ancestors that nobody wants to receive.
Oh beloved, whether you know a lot or a little about your ancestors, there is something that you can know. For a born-again believer there is a legacy to leave. But you don’t have to leave a legacy of fear (or anger or alcoholism or whatever you see in your blood line).
Whatever your family dealt with in the past is not yours to receive. Maybe you were told you are just like someone from the past. Don’t take that on to become the embodiment of them. It’s your life, given to you by the Lord. He formed you in your mother’s womb. He gave you all you will ever need. He makes all your life worth living. Don’t think because you see a problem recurring in generations that it’s now your turn to have that problem. It’s not yours to live with or live up to.
God loves you and He’s for you. Rejoice that you get a new life with the blood of the Lamb without spot or wrinkle! Resist the urge to take on ungodly mantels that aren’t for you. Repent for those old ways that lead to more trouble in your family. Ask God to reveal the truth about you as His child through new birth in Christ. And live a joyful life of freedom to break curses and restore lives! In the mighty name of Jesus, the keeper of your wonderful new life!
Ezekiel 18:20 The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.
Joshua 24:15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.
Romans 1:17 For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”
John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
