Danny and I come from very different birthplaces. I was born in Houston Texas, the fourth largest city in the US. Danny was born in Hamlin Texas, a very small town in West Texas. We both moved a lot, so our hometown is up for grabs so to speak. A hometown is the city or town where a person was born or grew up. We can’t really put a finger on our hometowns, although I consider the small town of Blevins that for me and Danny considers the larger city of Abilene that for him.
But really, for the believer, our hometown is heaven. And God would like us to remember that always.
Oh beloved, whether you were born in the largest city or the smallest village, you were born right where God knew you would be. It didn’t catch Him by surprise. There is no right or wrong place to be born. And traveling families may have a hard time putting down roots or being able to call anywhere a true hometown.
But God wants you to know this morning that your hometown, as a born again believer, is now heaven. And while it may seem odd that you are a citizen of a whole different country, it is for your best interest to realize it. It helps to not expect to be so anchored in your earthly abode. It helps to not be so set on living out your entire life for a town in a state of a country on a planet in a universe. While that picture gets smaller and smaller, until even the world looks like a dot on the universe, you can’t even find heaven with the human eye. But your heart knows there’s a longing for a place beyond the earthly circumstances of your birth.
God also wants you to know that you are perfected in peace and wherever you are living, there is your place of peace. You are allowed to have a peaceful home and rejoice in the peace of God that passes human understanding. Conflict will abound in the world, there’s no getting around that. And as you can see in the news and social media, conflict is increasing, even angelic conflicts. But you are in the way of peace, you are safe in the arms of Jesus, who bought you with a great price and you are here as a visitor always not quite able to fit in yet always having an assignment from Holy Spirit to occupy until Jesus returns.
God loves you and He’s for you. In the wilderness of trials. In the promised land of rest. In the unknown place of travels. Wherever you go, let God take you there. And trust Him to remind you who you are and that you never have to wander without purpose or hope. Run to the Lord this morning and thank Him that your hometown is heaven and ask Him to renew your purpose and your fire for living as you walk through this world in your heavenly calling always.
Philippians 3:20 But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.
