Traditions of Gratefulness

The cornbread dressing has been mixed in the same Tupperware bowl that belonged to my mother. That bowl is over 50 years old. So last night when it was time to start putting the dressing together I was a little worried when we couldn’t find it. No, I was a LOT worried! I was upset that someone might have borrowed it. We searched high and low. We discussed where it might be. For some reason this traditional mixing bowl missing was more than I could take. Finally I went upstairs and as I put on my pajamas I talked to God about it and then texted it to my daughters : “well it’s not my kids, grandkids or husband missing, so we move on. We will live!”  I came back downstairs and what do you know, Danny found the bowl pushed back in a cabinet corner we’d already hunted.

Traditions are wonderful, family ties are awesome, but they cannot be the things that make or break our joy and peace.  We did find the old bowl, but I had truly found peace in my heart to move on and leave the less important “stuff” behind.

Oh beloved, are you holding out for the old days? Are you hunting to relive something that’s long gone? Are you wishing you could go back to the days when Thanksgivings were more simple, more family, more….?  God wants you to know this morning that regardless of what has been lost in your life, it’s not an eternal thing. You are still right in the Father’s arms, you are blessed from the Father’s heart and you are giving this day to culminate all the reasons to Give Thanks to the One who takes care of it all! It might be time to tell the Lord that you are able to move on.  It might be time to lay it all out before the Lord and see that these momentary light afflictions aren’t really afflictions at all – they are just things. And all of life can be summed up in “it is what it is” and you can move on! Move on to rejoice in what you do have! Move on to rehearse the promises of God for imperfect days!  Move on the relax in the presence of God, who will make even the dreariest Thanksgiving a real day of thanks! Your life is not summed up by the lost bowls, lost loves, lost hopes or dreams. God will make all things new for you in His time. The more you cultivate that heart of thanksgiving for every day, the better able you are to make it when things aren’t perfect. Life is more than stuff, it’s the stuff of God’s reality in your life that makes for generous living. You are a magnificent display of God’s wondrous care and you are going to make it through the day, even with its mishaps and missteps!  Focus on the true value of living a life of thanksgiving and you will find yourself full of the joy of the Lord, which is your true strength!

God loves you and He’s for you! Run to the Lord this morning before the busy-ness of this wonderful day gets going. Don’t worry about a thing, just pray about everything and don’t forget to thank Him for all He has done! Let His light shine through you to the ones who are with you today as you live in the Light of His blessings for you!

Psalm 33:1 Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones; Praise is becoming to the upright.

I Thessalonians 5:18 in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

I Chronicles 17:8 Oh give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples.

Psalm 50:23 He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me; And to him who orders his way aright I shall show the salvation of God

Hebrews 13:15 Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name!

About rebekahbeene

In a Women’s meeting in 1983, I went up for prayer and to see if God had “anything for me”. The woman of God who was praying for people spoke over my life. She said these words: “You will write books. You can go to the bank on it. Rivers of living water will flow from your belly…”
