When our son stays at the house I always try to wash his clothes. It’s a motherly instinct in me I guess – clean clothes mean a healthier life. My big mistake was washing a set of his clothes without cleaning out his pockets. His pockets are full of work related stuff – dirt, grass, debris. It makes for a messy lint filter and dryer floor. Even though this is a daily ritual for him, it’s nice to daily empty the pockets of all that stuff and start again with clean pockets. Imagine if he never emptied his pockets just how full would they get and how uncomfortable it would be.
Oh beloved, God speaks to my heart and to yours. He says come to me daily and empty your pockets. Loosen the debris of the day. There are going to be days that are much dirtier than others – harder places to go through with more junk to sift through. God wants you to give it all to Him – every little bit of it. Make it a daily ritual to unload the stuff. Even as you want to turn it round and round in your hand and remind yourself of how awful that chunk of junk was, just hand it to the Lord. He has huge shoulders to cry on, a huge heart to plead for mercy and a huge wastebasket – so big that it’s called the sea of forgetfulness. Give it all – the stuff you’ve done and the stuff done unto you. Just like the good feeling of clean pockets, so too is the wonderful feeling of a clean heart, which brings a renewed spirit.
You were never meant to bear burdens. You were born to release them to God who removes them forever. You were never meant to carry the weight of things done that you can’t do a thing about. Even if it’s junk at the hands of another you cannot afford to carry it. Even if you want to remind yourself of things that hurt you so much, you cannot afford to keep the contents. God doesn’t want you sifting through it day after day. He wants you free to love Him completely, follow Him with a whole heart and walk lightly through life – never burdened down by junk.
God loves you and He’s for you. Empty your pockets beloved! God already knows what’s in them. He’s able to do what only He can do about it all. And He will give you joy, peace and love in return for the junky burdens you hand to Him. Rejoice as you walk lighter and more swiftly knowing that you are free to live in the Light of His Glory and Grace!
