My brother is coming to visit this weekend. He’s bringing a cousin and our mom’s only living sister with him. I’m excited to get to see him and them all. But I also want to fret about the house. It’s clean. It’s good. It’s comfortable. But every once in a while I want it to be different. If I dwell on it I will just fret and spend too much time trying to make it perfect. Can you relate? Working so hard on the façade can actually rob us of enjoying opening our homes to people. It can also rob us of letting ourselves and our loved ones enjoy living in the house. My parents had a plaque that read, “Come in, sit down, relax, converse. Our house doesn’t always look like this. Sometimes it’s even worse”. My mother was a great housekeeper. I think it was their attitude of hospitality to set people at ease. Hospitality doesn’t focus on the outward appearance, but rather it focuses on the heart.
God speaks to my heart. We want life to be different, but God wants us to live the life we have differently.
Oh beloved, God looks at you and He says “perfect”. He wants to dwell in your heart and make His home in your life. He wants to be the most invited guest. He doesn’t want to wait until it’s all neat and tidy. He doesn’t want you to say wait Lord, I’ve got to get myself together first, then you can come in. No, He stands at the door and knocks. He wants to be escorted into the mess of your life, warts and all. Imperfection won’t horrify Him, for He alone is the Perfect One. As you learn to let Him into the closets and corners of your life, you will find that as He sheds His light on everything you no longer worry about outward appearance. As He comes into your heart to love you, you will find yourself relaxing about things that don’t really matter. And you will find yourself enjoying the things that really do matter. He wants to set up the most beautiful home in your heart and change everything. And He invites you and me to live the life we have differently.
God loves you and He’s for you. He is the One Person who comes only to see you. He has put His Spirit in your heart to guide you, direct you, keep you safe and relax, refresh and renew you. He will rock your world but it will be rocked with love. He will turn things upside down but you will love it. His changes bring peace and joy. Let Him in this morning. Fling open the doors and raise the windows of your heart and let Him come in and let Him teach you how to live life differently. You are destined to be a display, both you and your home, of His glorious love and outlandish grace! Open his Word and read: you’ve already been perfected in Christ and now the remodel is ongoing as you learn to live free to be you in the Light of His glory and grace!
