Back in the early 70’s we watched a show called “Love American Style”. Viewers were entertained with stories about common people finding love in all walks of life. It also featured a real catchy theme song, which many of you could still hear the tune and sing some of the words to this day.
As I think about this show I am reminded that love, American style, is a real thing. Love is so talked about that we spent $18.6 million last year proving our love for one another. I’m not advocating giving up on the day of love. I still have the first dozen roses my sweet hubby ever gave me and I love getting flowers on the special day. I love the idea of Valentine’s Day and I still have memories of decorating a shoebox at school and getting those cute little valentine’s and giving them as well. What I am saying is we spend a lot of our money trying to prove something, but the everyday success of love, real love, is often lost in the mix of movies and mayhem.
What I am saying is that God is love. His love is so rich, and yet so free. His love has no strings attached. His love was nailed to a cross. His love isn’t dependent on whether we behave or don’t behave. His love is there for us when we are far away or when we stay very close to Him. He loved us before we came to Him in faith. He loves us no matter if we grow in love with Him or stay surface and maintain our distance. His love isn’t a box of candy or a bouquet of flowers. His love is salvation and justification and sanctification. Indeed as the hymnist wrote, “What wondrous love is this oh my soul oh my soul?”
Oh beloved, God loves you. God loves YOU. GOD loves you. Live with that. Snuggle up to that. Accept that gift. It’s not a one day a year gift, it’s eternal. Everlasting love is what God feels for you. This love is independent of your do’s and don’ts list. It’s independent of any worthiness or unworthiness you may feel. You are a recipient of this magnificent, perpetual, selfless, love. God won’t rescind this love ever. No take backs as God love, for He is love. His essence, His nature and His motive is love. You are a blessed a highly precious beloved child of God and you were in His heart even before your first heartbeat in your mother’s womb. Your first breath, your first name, your first love and your first realization of Christ as Savior were all recorded in His book before you even existed. You can’t earn God’s love and you can’t lose it.
God loves you and He’s for you. No American style love is this. No indecisive care that goes with every whim of the seasons and the holidays. He is always for you, Christ is ever interceding for you in heaven. He will take are of you, He will see you through all the hardships, rejection, pain. He will walk with you from glory to glory as you learn to live loved. Rest in His promise of Agape love. Rejoice in his promise of unending care. Recite His Words about His love and let it sink into your heart and mind. You are the showcase of His love for a world that has yet to know. Live in the light of His love, glory and grace and watch as He makes all things work together for your good, simply because He loves you.
I John 4:9-10 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. This is real love–not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.
I John 3:1a See how very much our Father loves us, for He calls us his children, and that is what we are!
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Ephesians 5:2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Jeremiah 31:3 The LORD appeared to him from afar, saying, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness.”
2 Timothy 1:9 For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time–to show us His grace through Christ Jesus. NIV
Psalm 136:1 Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! His faithful love endures forever.
