In the movie “My Girl” the funeral home owner’s daughter spends a lot of time around funerals. She sees a lot of death. Of course many of the people who pass are citizens of her town so she knows them. She also hears how they died. She has a close relationship with the town doctor and unfortunately visits with him often, citing that she has the same ailments that the deceased had. She even mentions that she has prostate trouble! It’s funny and sad at the same time. Kids hear things and they sometimes take it in for truth for themselves. One of our grandsons told me that he was worried about the cold weather “because it makes my bones ache”, and he shook his head and looked down. Obviously he’d heard that phrase somewhere.
Have you heard bad news? Are you wondering what your symptoms mean? Do you expect the worst? Any threat of bad news can make us feel that it’s surely going to happen to us. One mention of terrorism on tv and we’re ready to lock ourselves in our homes permanently. There are real threats in life from foods that are bad for us to possible apocalyptic chaos. Our bodies do have problems. We should be prepared. But we don’t have to fear what may happen. We don’t have to live with the symptoms of others, positive that we will meet the same fate. Life is only so many days long for humanity, but we can’t be boxed in to live and die with fear and torment and worry and every ailment of spirit soul and body that’s out there.
Oh beloved, you are blessed! That means you are holy, sanctified and set apart. Your days are not numbered by the present health threat, the television news headlines or the threat of disaster. Your days are numbered by the Lord Himself. This is no fearful thing, but joyful. God knows your frame and He’s mindful that you are human and subject to a lot of frailties and yet your life is in His hands. You can rest assured that as you live for Jesus and focus on His love and care, He will get you exactly where you need to be and give you the strength, stamina and time to accomplish it all. You don’t have to dread today’s forecast even if it’s gloom and doom. Fatalism isn’t your lot in life. Pessimism and defeat aren’t gifts given from God to His children. For God says My people who know Me shall be strong and do exploits! Your life should be full of God Himself. Yes, ailments could come. Age could begin to set in. But even then beloved, your life is still in the Lord’s hands. He has you covered. Your life is meant to be lived with joy in the Spirit and trust in the Lord right up to the very end. And then, when heaven is ready for you, it’s a joyful step into the best future ever. The grave will have no victory and death will have no sting for the believer who has put their trust in the Blood of Christ.
God loves you and He’s for you. Your days, every single one of them, are in His hands. The hard days, days of illness, sorrow, pain and the unsure days, as well as the monumental days, the great days and the happy days – all of them work together for your good and God’s glory. My prayer is that we as believers, me included, will learn to live every day of our life with delight in the Lord – as though it may be our last, but knowing that with Christ – we live forever in heaven! The end may come, it surely will eventually, but for us the Son of Righteousness will take us home and all that we’ve faced and overcome here will be left behind. You are a magnificent display of God’s peace, comfort, protection and love all the days of your life. No weapon formed against you will prosper and goodness and mercy promise to follow you all the days of your life and you will dwell in the House of the Lord forever!
