A friend shared her hunting trip with her seven year old son. He was so excited to get to hunt. They saw a deer and he shot at it and missed. He stood up in the stand and announced “That’s it. I’m done. I’m not gonna get a deer.” Mom had to talk with him about it to convince him that there was another chance. He didn’t need to give up on one shot. She had noticed that right as he squeezed the trigger on the first shot he looked away from the sight. That put his shot off the mark. She told him to try again and not to get his eye off the sight. It worked. Another deer came even closer and he tried again. This time he was successful at hitting the one he wanted to hit. He was ecstatic! “I did it! I did it!”
Oh beloved, maybe you’ve tried to hit the mark for the Lord. You knew you were right in the crosshairs of His will. But you missed the shot. Or someone stopped you. Or you delayed the shot as you viewed another’s better outcome. Either way, it was a miss. You’re ready to give up. Why try again? It’s over. Your chance was taken and it failed. Time to pick up the pieces and go home. Maybe, just maybe, you got your eyes off the Lord.
But wait, this is no ordinary endeavor. This is God’s call. He set you up in the life you have to try. And try again. His mercies are new every morning. His plans don’t fail even if you do. Run to the Lord, the King of the Universe and let Him re-set your sights on success. Aim closely, keep your eyes on the One who has called you to be successful in the Spirit. There is always another shot. Just don’t give up, don’t give in, don’t go away feeling like a failure.
God loves you and He’s for you. So He will never chide you when you mess up. He will never tell you to pack it up and quit. He will though, remind you of the Truth about you. He will tell you He loves you in spite of the mis-shot. He will never reject you no matter what goes wrong. Your talents and abilities are God given and He will help you hone in on the quality of your gifts as you keep trying and keep learning. He won’t let you compare yourself to others because you are uniquely created to be the best you in Christ. He will lovingly remind you that you can do all things through Him. Keep aiming and keep reminding yourself that you are a victorious warrior of the faith as you live in the Light of God’s Truth.
