All over the state, old railroads are being dismantled. Tracks are being pulled up and done away with. Roads we regularly travel over have only a brushy area to look at where once there were train crossings. Even though some of them are long gone I found myself slowing down to prepare for an old regular crossing. As though they were still there, I gingerly drove up, preparing for the thump and bump. The smooth transition was a surprise. “Oh yeah.” I drive on, still amazed that so many metal roads that took people and coal and other times across country are now gone.
Memories of the past want to slow us down too. We travel along in life and we are reminded of some mistake and misstep and we grind to a halt. If we’re not careful we’ll pull over and replay the old roads in our minds. The enemy loves to remind us of where we were and how we used to travel. He’ll try to tell us that we have no recourse but to replay the errors and go down the same tracks. It’s destiny he’ll whisper into your heart. Clackity clack he goes, convincing us that we’ll not make it across.
Oh beloved, God has removed the sins of your past, the mistakes of your other years and the missteps you wish you could forget. Just as the tracks of the train have been removed completely, so have your sins been removed from you. To be in Christ, born again, means that this is a new day with a new road. The old mode of transportation, getting you where you need to go in this world, has been smoothed over. You don’t have to stop and listen for the approaching train of guilt, pain, agony and humiliation. No more train. No more collision with the past. You are a blood bought believer who is traveling God’s highway of peace. Your imperfection met His perfection and now you are stronger and victorious and overcoming the old stops that the enemy wants to remind you of.
God loves you and He’s for you. The tracks of your past are gone. The road is resurfaced and smoothed out and full of His mercy, grace, peace and joy. Drive on. Don’t stop another time to recount those past errors. Move on and get going, for God is taking you places you only dreamed you would go. Don’t let anyone else remind you either, for they will not be doing God’s work but the enemy’s job. The highway is called Salvation and it’s taking you through Justification and on to Glorification with Heaven as your ultimate destination as you live in the Light of His Word!
