Swim in the River of Life

A few years ago we went to Georgia on the motorcycle. Northern Georgia is quite beautiful and full of mountains and lush forests. We traveled in a group to a small Alpine-like town of Helen. There was a river through the town that wound along the highway. A multitude of folks floated colorful inner tubes on this river. It seemed that everyone wanted to float in this river. We watched and were amazed. Although we watched, none of us went into the river. None of us got one of those colorful floats.

Although we saw the sights, because none of us got in the river we didn’t really experience it. We were bystanders.  It was great, but several of us would like to go back and get into the flow of things. That was our chance and maybe one day we’ll return.

Oh beloved, maybe you’ve been watching. You’ve seen the flow of the river of life. You see those who are enjoying life in Christ with complete abandon. They are splashing and laughing and participating in what the Lord is doing in the earth today. But you’re not sure about it. It looks like fun but you’re content to stay on the sidelines and take pictures. You may have stepped out for the Lord in the past and been terribly hurt. Disappointment, rejection, unworthiness came your way and you just don’t want that to happen again. People can be cruel, sometimes they don’t want to share their river flow experience and you were left on the bank alone and bewildered. Maybe you thought you could trust God and you feel He left you up a creek without a paddle.

But God speaks to your heart and He’s saying come on in, the water that flows in My River is pure and crystal and perfect. I did not abandon you then, I won’t abandon you now. Sometimes the river flows through rapids and you can lose sight of the Lord, but He was with you all the time. Even when you got out of the flow. Hurts, anguish, and mourning can sideline the best swimmers in the River of Life, but God says return to Me and try again. He is calling you back to Himself. He will swim along with you. He promises that even the floods that are threatening your life right now won’t drown you if you’ll hang onto Him. He is the ultimate flotation devise – He holds you up, He keeps you safe, He carries you through to calmer waters. The water may look deep and unsteady, but it’s full of life and healing and blessings.

God loves you and He’s for you. Now’s the best time to trust Him and jump in for all it’s worth. You’ll find refreshment, nourishment, encouragement and a reason to keep swimming with the Lord. Trust Him today, give Him the things that keep you on the sidelines and let Him heal you as the River flows.

Psalm 36:8 They feast on the abundance of Your house; You give them drink from Your river of delights. NIV

Deuteronomy 32:10 In a desert land He found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; He guarded him as the apple of His eye NIV

Isaiah 58:11 And the LORD will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places, And give strength to your bones; And you will be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.

John 7:38  He who believes in Me [who cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me] as the Scripture has said, From his innermost being shall flow [continuously] springs and rivers of living water.

About rebekahbeene

In a Women’s meeting in 1983, I went up for prayer and to see if God had “anything for me”. The woman of God who was praying for people spoke over my life. She said these words: “You will write books. You can go to the bank on it. Rivers of living water will flow from your belly…”
