As the two little boys handed me their rocks they had picked up at church, I looked at each one. And I remembered all those rocks I’d picked from my son’s pockets as I washed every week. Sometimes I’d find him sleeping with his prized possessions. There were times when his pockets would be so full of rocks or dead bugs or other special things, he could hardly ride his bike or jump outside. I tried to make sure that I emptied his pockets during laundry time so that there were no rocks left in the wash. If there were any, they would cause such loud knocking and rattling that no one could hear anything else.
Oh beloved, it’s time to empty your pockets. Heavy loads will keep you stuck & you really want to move on higher with Him. Now that God has chosen you, there is no need to keep holding onto things. What are you pockets full of? Regrets? Drop them all. There’s not room for a single one where you are going. Fears? Those are especially tenacious but pour them out to God who will dispose of them for you. Anxieties? What if’s? Flush them down the storm drain or they will drain you.
Now that God has chosen you…. Just as the boys chose those rocks from the thousands lining the drive in the churchyard, God chose you. You are chosen. No longer do you need the childhood pockets filled with childhood mementos. Because He has chosen you, your life is not held down with the weight of rocks anymore. You are lifted up into the heavenlies with Christ. You are free. Free to live loved. Free to lighten your load. Free to let it all go out with the wash. Even those things that are current and fresh and still open to tears. God knows beloved, God knows. But He wants to take you beyond those things. Don’t pick them up again; they only get heavier and heavier.
God loves you and He’s for you. Those weights you want to hang onto will never do you any good. Those weights someone else might have handed to you aren’t from God. Drop them all, clean out your pockets and get ready to enjoy living life in the Light of God’s Word!
